Preparing to refinance your mortgage is similar to that of purchasing a home. In both cases, borrowers must provide their lenders with numerous specified documents, such as tax returns and income statements. It can (but shouldn’t be!) a lengthy process. Prior to applying for a mortgage refinance, save yourself tons of time by reading our mortgage refinancing checklist.

  1. Make sure you have a copy of your homeowner’s insurance declarations page
  2. Gather all W-2’s and 1099’s from all employers for the past 2 years
  3. Have your driver’s license and all state ID cards prepared for all borrowers
  4. Retrieve a copy of the past two months’ bank statements, your most recent statement for any asset accounts you have (401k, IRA, life insurance), and account numbers, balances and payments for all open debt
  5. Gather paycheck stubs for the most recent 30-day period or a signed 30-day printout from your employer
  6. Find any divorce and child support papers, as well as your 1-year Friend of the Court payment history (if applicable)
  7. Locate bankruptcy paperwork and discharge notices (if applicable)

As you gather the contents of this refinancing checklist, it’s important to make sure you keep your paperwork organized. This may not be the only paperwork your lender requires, as each refinance is unique, but completing this checklist will certainly help you expedite the completion process.
